I want to get into Ham Radio?

Hi people! I'm really into electronics, and recently bought a complete -for a beginner at least- set of tools: a decent soldering iron, stand, desoldering pump/wick, solder and some simple components like a battery holder. Our technology teacher talked to us about ham radios in telecoms chapter and I was charmed! I want to build my own radio now, but as much as I search Google, I can find either ready ones or instructions on how to operate it, not how to build it.

Do you have any tutorials for that? Please, something from scratch, not "buy this circuit and then solder that component". Of course, as long this is feasible, I understand I may be asking for something impossible, but even if it's hard building it, I don't mind it, even if there's a ton of math, I can sit and learn because I love it. Actually, I'm studying to get into University as an Electrical and Computer Engineer.

Thank you.

Answer:This is the information I was able to find for you. I hope it helps. As far as getting your license, all of the exam questions are on the computer. Don't be fooled as there are 4 questions for you to choose but they are not set up on the actual exam as on the lessons, so know the answer not the location of the answer. If I can help you any further email me. n8odz

Answer:You contact the organization of hams, the ARRL http://www.arrl.org/ and ideally find a local radio club and get suggestions. Because of possible interference with other radio services, it has been true for decades that ham radios that people built were built from kits. Building a short wave transmitter with wiring going the wrong paths, etc., will result in a failure that might knock out TV reception and emergency services radio.

Answer:many people can and still do build hams all over the world although parts are more and more difficult to obtain now

best bet is getting signed into a yahoo group dealing with ham operators and those new freinds will be able to point you towards 1950s to 70 pop science articles with wiring diagrams

good luck

Answer:no cut and paste from someone that wouldn't know a bug if it came up and bit them… (a bug is either an IC or a morse code key).

If you are into building USEFUL things, check out Ramsey Electronics (www.ramseyelectronics.com).

If you are interested in other projects, Far Circuits sells boards and the boards include a copy of the original magazine or handbook designs. www.farcircuits.com

A great resource is the ARRL Handbook www.arrl.org as well as the RSGB Handbook. The RSGB uses EU parts, sometimes they are hard to find here. www.rsgb.org

Kits from Ramsey are very "heathkit like" while boards from Far Circuits are just that, boards that have been etched and drilled. The magazine or handbook designs give the schematics and you need to know how to read a schematic.

Your school SHOULD have a ham club. Most do.

Today, there is not much radio building…. BUT… THE BETTER ONES ARE.

The latest trend in radio is Software Defined Radio - SDR. Only Icom has SDR receivers, but there are at least two SDR kits. Since they are SDR, there is not a lot of serious calibration, that is all Software Defined — hence SDR. Both are highly prized because they are every bit as good or superior to the mass produced imports.

Oh, I almost forgot, Not only Icom, but a military comm company in Tennessee called TenTec also has some nice SDR receivers.

Answer:All those answers are good. The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications (2010) is the authoritative source for Ham radio technical and construction information. The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) has other books with more focus on various areas too. You will want to also get the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual. This is what you will study to get your Technician license.

The Tech license gives you full Amateur privileges in the Ham VHF, UHF and higher bands. It also gives you limited Morse code (called CW in Hamspeak) subbands in the high frequency (HF, 3 - 30 MHz) spectrum. My first ham rig was a low-power CW transceiver since I was a novice class back then (same HF privileges as Tech only). That might be a good first rig for you too. It was a kit. A lot easier than building from scratch.

However, if you want to build a more complex rig for voice communication, you could build a rig for the 10 meter Amateur Radio band where technicians have data modes (radioteletype and other computerized digital modes) and single side band (SSB) voice. All this in a limited portion of the 10m band that techs have privileges in.

You could also go for the next higher license class, General. This class license will give you all Amateur privileges except for a few subbands in the 80m, 40m, 20m and 15m bands reserved for Advanced class (no longer issued) and Amateur Extra class licenses. then you would be free to use as complex rig as you want to build. To study for this class, get the ARRL General Class License Manual.

You might also check out the ARRL magazine QEX. It is a magazine dedicated to communications experimenters. Another ARRL magazine is QST. This is their general Amateur Radio magazine that also has construction articles.

Go to the ARRL website www.arrl.com, and click on the hamfest link. Look for a hamfest in your area. A hamfest is an electronic fleamarket. This will be a great source for your electronic parts and other stuff. Your mouth will be watering at all the stuff there!
